Dana,
PLEASE tell us you don’t really support the line item veto!! SCOTUS was right to strike it down when it was granted to Clinton. It has NO constitutional basis whatsoever and it is a flagrantly ILLEGAL delegation of power! The burden of responsibility to cut spending is with Congress, not the President.
What we want in Congress is someone who will follow the CONSTITUTION, not tradition or popular opinion. Unfortunately even Republicans and many conservatives have no idea what this means. It is good that you are running against Nancy Pelosi, but we want to make sure that we don’t replace her with a big-spending Republican. We want the guarantee that you will not approve anything that Congress is not explicitly allowed to decide by the Constitution.
Adam,
A couple of points:
If you are against the line item veto as an illegal delegation of power, I certainly hope you condemn all of the other delegations of power like the budget process and the power to wage war.
Congress has never acted by only voting on what is “explicitly allowed” in the Constitution, not even in the first administration of George Washington. Congress has some leeway - they’ve got to; we’re now a nation of over 300 million people, and there’s a lot that is essential to the country which isn’t explicitly allowed for in the Constitution.
Obviously there areas where Congress has overstepped its boundaries. I believe the Department of Education and the Social Security Administration are examples.
But please. It’s time to get realistic.
Dana, I enjoyed reading through your issues pages. I hope that you put more up, they really help inform the voters.
Dana, where do you stand on the issue of abortion? Do you think that tax payers should be forced to pay for abortions?
I didn’t see any commentary on this issue.
Mrs. Shannon Lawrence
I am wondring why there is no response to the Abortion question, we want to know do you support abortion. Most conservites do not and I am against abortion.
